The Art of Letting Go
Thoughtful insights into downsizing, preserving memories, and embracing your next chapter.
When I downsized a few years ago, I thought I had planned everything carefully.
I spent months sorting, donating, selling, and making difficult decisions about what to keep. I was convinced everything would fit into a single storage pod.
It didn't.
So I ordered a second one.
When moving day arrived, both pods were sitting in the driveway of my new home. Thankfully, it was a wide driveway, because they took up a lot of space.
As I stood there looking at them, reality set in.
Even after months of downsizing, I still had more than my new home could hold. There simply wasn't enough room.
What happened next wasn't part of my plan.
Once the essentials were inside, I found myself selling furniture and household items directly from those storage pods. People came to my driveway, looked inside, and gave cherished belongings a new home.
At the time, it felt overwhelming.
Looking back, I realize it taught me one of the biggest lessons about downsizing: it's rarely a single decision or a perfectly planned event. It's a journey of adjustment, emotion, and learning to let go a little at a time.
If you're beginning that journey yourself, I hope these insights remind you that it's okay if everything doesn't go exactly as planned. You're not alone, and with patience and the right approach, you'll find your way to a home that fits your next chapter.
