Home Staging Accessories That Help Your Home Stand Out
by Vanda Jackson
When preparing your home for sale, the smallest details can have a meaningful impact. Furniture establishes how a room functions, but carefully chosen accessories add warmth, balance and a sense of completion. The goal is not to fill every surface or make your home look like a showroom. It is to create welcoming spaces that photograph well, feel thoughtfully presented and allow buyers to imagine themselves living there.
Here are several accessories that can help enhance your home’s appeal.
1. Mirrors
Mirrors reflect light and can help a room feel brighter and more spacious. Position one where it will reflect a window, an attractive view or another appealing feature—not a cluttered area or television. Choose a size that is appropriate for the wall and hang it at a comfortable viewing height.
2. Fresh Flowers
A simple arrangement of fresh flowers can bring colour and life into a room. Seasonal blooms placed in an entryway, kitchen or dining area can create a welcoming impression. Keep arrangements modest and choose flowers with little or no fragrance, as strong scents may be distracting or uncomfortable for some buyers.
3. Throw Pillows
A few coordinating pillows can refresh a sofa, chair or bed without requiring a major investment. They are also an easy way to introduce colour and texture. Avoid using too many. Seating should still feel comfortable and accessible rather than overly arranged.
4. Area Rugs
An area rug can define a conversation area, add warmth and help connect the colours within a room. The correct size is important: a rug that is too small may make the room feel less spacious. Make sure rugs lie flat and are secured so they do not create a tripping hazard.
5. Artwork
Artwork can add interest and character while helping a room feel complete. Select pieces that suit the scale and style of the space without becoming too personal or visually overwhelming. Large walls often benefit from one substantial piece rather than several small items scattered across the surface.
6. Simple Table Settings
A lightly styled dining table can help buyers picture how the space might be enjoyed. You do not need an elaborate formal setting. A centrepiece, table runner and a few coordinated place settings may be enough. Leave plenty of open space so the table does not appear crowded.
7. Decorative Bowls and Trays
Bowls and trays can bring order to countertops, coffee tables and entryway consoles. They are especially useful for grouping a few carefully selected objects into one intentional display. Remember that less is often more. Accessories should enhance the surface rather than cover it.
8. Fresh, Coordinated Bedding
A beautifully made bed should be the focal point of the bedroom. I recommend crisp white bedding layered with full pillows and a soft duvet to create a fresh, luxurious look. The bed should feel plush and inviting—the kind you immediately want to sink into. A folded throw can add subtle texture and a touch of colour without taking away from the clean, restful feeling.
9. Books
A few books can add warmth to shelves, side tables and coffee tables. Arrange them neatly and leave some open space so shelving does not feel crowded. Books can also be used to vary the height of decorative objects and create a more balanced display.
10. Greenery
Healthy plants or realistic artificial greenery can bring freshness and softness into a room. They are particularly effective in spaces that feel overly neutral or have many hard surfaces. Choose plants that are appropriately scaled. A small plant may suit a bathroom shelf, while a taller one can soften an empty corner.
11. Soft Textures
Throws, cushions and other textiles can make a room feel warm and inviting while introducing softness and texture. For a pop of colour, look to something already in the room for inspiration—perhaps a shade found in a favourite piece of artwork or an area rug. Repeating that colour in one or two accessories will help the space feel coordinated and intentional.
Use these pieces thoughtfully, especially in smaller rooms, where too many layers can quickly create visual clutter.
12. Well-Placed Lighting
Lighting can influence how buyers experience a room and how well it appears in photographs. Table and floor lamps can brighten dark corners while adding another decorative layer. Before showings, replace burned-out bulbs and use bulbs with a consistent colour temperature throughout each room, preferably daylight bulbs. Open curtains and blinds whenever possible to make the most of natural light.
Clean windows and windowsills, then open curtains and blinds wide to let in as much natural light as possible. Remove heavy, dark curtains and dated sheers that make the room feel closed in or confining. When it comes to window treatments, less is often more. Unobstructed windows allow the room to shine, feel more spacious and create a brighter, more inviting atmosphere.
A Thoughtful Approach Makes the Difference
Accessories should support the room rather than compete for attention. Before adding anything new, begin by removing clutter, personal collections and pieces that no longer enhance the space. Then introduce only what helps the room feel balanced, welcoming and purposeful. Thoughtful presentation can strengthen a buyer’s first impression, improve listing photographs and help your home stand out among competing properties.
